The Doctors and Staff at Ling House Medical Centre in Keighley are planning a health education day at the practice in Scott St. on Thursday 16th April. With the support of the Dementia Friendly Keighley Committee (DFK) and the local Alzheimer’s Society they are organising a series of talks and information sessions to raise awareness of dementia amongst their patients. There will also be a representative from Carers Resource to offer help and advice to carers. Members of the practices Patient Participation Group will also be on hand to meet and greet patients.

 A practice spokesman said

Alzheimer’s Society research shows that about 800,000 people in the UK have some form of dementia. In less than 10 years this is expected to rise to more than a million and Keighley’s total number of people living with dementia will likewise rise. It is vital that our communities are prepared by creating environments that can support those people to continue to live fulfilling, independent lives for as long as possible.

The Dementia Day will run between 10am and 4pm. There will be experienced people on hand throughout the day to offer guidance on many aspects of living with dementia in the Keighley area.

The DFK dementia Champions will also be running hour long Dementia Friends sessions to help members of the public understand what dementia is and what action they can take to make their community more dementia friendly.

Maggie Marsden of DFK said “dementia is something of a hidden disease and few of us feel we know enough about it. Ling House is leading the way in Keighley by offering this excellent opportunity for their patients to find out more.”

Sandra Kelly, also of DFK and a dementia Champion said of the dementia Friends initiative “ Dementia Friends isn’t about creating experts, it’s about helping people understand a little bit more about what it’s like to live with the condition and then turn that understanding into action - anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend.’

The Dementia Friends sessions will take place at 10.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm. Please contact Ling House Medical Centre on 01535 605747 for more information and to book a place.
